Antonio Margarito Copies Manny Pacquiao's Style Of Training
1:33 PM // 0 comments // Ian Purugganan // Category: Margarito , Pacquiao // As Manny Pacquiao and his entourage are preparing to take off for the mountains of Baguio to begin training camp for his coming title fight, Antonio Margarito and Co. are likewise set to do the same.Trainer Robert Garcia said this coming week Margarito officially begins his seven-week preparation against Pacquiao as they are headed to Oxnard, California where they will be based until the final two weeks of training for the Nov. 13 showdown at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas.
“When we get to Oxnard, we’re going to be ready to spar and plan for the fight,” said Garcia following a workout at the South El Monte boxing club in California.
The 32-year-old Margarito has started keeping himself in shape by running at the terrains of Mt. Baldy in California.
“That’s what we’re doing and we’re doing it everyday,” Garcia added.
Pacquiao has also been in the same mode the past one week, regularly running every morning around the vast subdivision where his palatial house in San Pedro, Laguna is located.
In the afternoon, the Filipino champion sweats it out with trainer Freddie Roach at the Elorde boxing gym in Roosevelt Ave. in Quezon City.
And barring any last-minute hitches, Team Pacquiao is scheduled to travel to the country’s Summer Capital today to begin the long delayed training camp for the Margarito fight.
“I haven’t changed my mind. Sparring begins Tuesday and then Thursday,” said Roach, who disclosed the 5-foot-11 Michael Medina will be Pacquiao’s initial sparring partner.
Garcia said the 32-year-old Margarito has checked in at the pre-training camp weighing at 160, just 10 pounds off the catch weight of 150.
The soft-spoken trainer doesn’t see any problem for the Mexican as far as weight is concern.
“He’s ready to fight. He’s close to weight already and his conditioning is good,” Garcia added. “He’s running the mountains that mostly everyone does in an hour. He did it in 47 minutes. So he’s ready.”
And if Garcia is to be believed, Margarito hasn’t lost his power despite having fought just twice in the last 22 months.
Garcia complained of about his aching ribs caused by those Margarito body punches while they do the mitts.
“I had to switch body-shields. My ribs were sore already. So I ordered another brand,” he said.
“I still feel it but not as much.”
